Spotlight on the Chelsea Park Sector

chelsea-park-trailThe trail building in the area encircled by Old Chelsea, the 105, and Scott is a good example of the spirit and vision of Chelsea Trails.

This ‘triangle’ contains two elementary schools, the Meredith Centre, and many homes and municipal green spaces. But right now, in many cases, a child living 500 metres from their school can’t walk or bike there. This is particularly true if the only entrance to a home or street is off of the 105, on which children are not allowed to ride their bikes (since the speed limit for cars is 70km/hr).

Marc Desjardins, the SCT Sector Champion for this area, hopes to change all that. (more…)

New Set of Historical Panels along the Community Winter Trail in the Mill Road area.

Chelsea Trails is once again partnering with the Gatineau Valley Historical Society on a third set of interpretive panels along the railway corridor featuring scenes from Chelsea’s past. The previous two years have seen the installation of a series of historical panels along the railway in the Kirk’s Ferry/Larrimac and Cascades sectors. This year, new panels will highlight the Mill Road area, including the site of the former Chelsea train station, the original English Chelsea Elementary School building and the former section foreman’s house.

Featured here, former Chelsea Elementary students, RJ Hughes and Harold Reid located the sites, while Chelsea Trails Alain Piché marked the placing of the posts for the panels and GVHS rep Louise Schwartz looked on. Photo credit: Heidi von Graevenitz.

What is Sentiers Chelsea Trails up to this summer?

Once again, volunteers are busy building trails for the benefit of the community!

The major work this summer is on the Chelsea Park Trail, which runs from Ch. du Manoir to Route 105 (behind Ben’s Towing). Coordinated by Marc Desjardins, this roughly 1km trail features a beautiful 14 meter bridge and one more to come this fall – the result of many, many hours of volunteer building effort! It’s designed for travel on foot only – not bikes – to respect the wishes of adjacent homeowners. (more…)

And there were “sweet stops” set up along the trail offering cups of hot chocolate and generous amounts of pastries donated by Les Fougères and Une Boulangerie dans un village to fuel the skiers, snowshoers and walkers on their journey.

Getting to work on the transformation of tracks project

A10-The Skis' PerspectiveAs many of you know, Chelsea Trails supports transforming the railway corridor into a linear park. This unique corridor of land, belonging to Chelsea, runs the entire length of the municipality alongside a beautiful river, and connects numerous neighbourhoods. It has been used by Chelsea residents for 10 years as a very popular Winter Community Trail, and we believe there would be great benefits if it were expanded for year around use.  (more…)
