It was a perfect fall day for our last hike in the Chelsea 150 series. Geologist Dr Rob Rainbird led about 50 people through the remarkable and diverse geological story of the Musie Ponds area.

Visiting various rock formations, we travelled back over a billion years to the creation and breakup of supercontinents, the formation of Himalayan-sized mountains, and more recently evidence of the Wisconsin glaciation, of erratics and striations. Who knew this story is written right in our backyard?!

Thank you to Dr Rainbird for his very compelling interpretation, to the municipality for their support, and to SCT’s president, Heather MacDonald, for her organization & timely leaf-blowing, making the hike available to many people.

Christoph Weber, Bonnie Pankiw and Betty Pavey led a very engaging and informative hike on Saturday in the chemin Dunmor - Lost Field area! ~24 people joined us, all of whom were fascinated by the cultural and natural heritage of the area that Christoph, Betty and Bonnie shared during the walk.

The theme “From Fields to Forests” revealed glimpses of the past 150 years that are still visible on the landscape: tall trees marking the edges of fields; wire fences with burnt posts reminiscent of fields and grass burning practices; old gates and flat surfaces indicating the location of former roads; and filled-in mica mines, remnants of mining activities in the region in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Join us for the next guided walk on September 27 in the village to explore and learn about the three cemeteries of Chelsea with four very knowledgeable residents!

A very successful launch to our first hike in the series today. About a dozen people showed up, including Mayor Pierre, and all were very engaged and interested. And fun! The hike was in Chelsea Park, along the wetland from Terrace du Dumoine. We all agreed it was splendid and beautiful in there!
